Jesus Christ is the “Most High God”

One of my favorite Bible study resources is my copy of Zondervan’s New International Version Study Bible. It absolutely is loaded with insights into the Scriptures, as well as interesting cultural and historical notes that shed light on life in Bible times. If you don’t have a copy, you need to get one yesterday.
Oh, [...]

Holy Ghost outpouring at Shake ‘n Steak

If you haven’t noticed yet, my friend Victor Aghadi left a fantastic comment on my previous post about the shooting at Farm King. Bartlett United Pentecostal Church, where Victor attends, recently hosted evangelist Travis Worthington. Victor reports that Worthington took 20 young people to the mall for evangelism. In one hour, the group secured 15 new [...]

Oral Roberts, 1918-2009

The big news in the religious world today was the passing or famous televangelist Oral Roberts, the founder of Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla. Roberts was 91 years old and living in Newport Beach, Calif. at the time of his death.
There will be many opinions voiced about Roberts in the coming days, but one [...]

“Touch not mine anointed”

Psalm 105:14-15 He suffered no man to do them wrong: yea, he reproved kings for their sakes; Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm. (King James Version)
Throughout my life, I have heard Psalm 105:15 quoted as a warning of the danger of speaking against the ministry, particularly the pastor. While I do [...]

Ezra-style leadership

Ezra 7:10 (New King James Version)
For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the Law of the LORD, and to do it, and to teach statutes and ordinances in Israel.
There’s an old saying that goes something like this: “Those who can, do; those who can’t, teach.”
You’ve probably gotten a chuckle out of this proverb at [...]

The only guaranteed church growth method

Pastors and church leaders, if you are hungry to hear a great preaching that will speak to your spirit, check out Terry Black’s message titled “Faith,” a sermon he preached at Mid-America Revival Conference (MARC) in Indianapolis last month.
You can find the sermon online at calvarytabindy.org/media.php. It’s on page 3 under the tab “Calvary Archive.” [...]

Sunday School cheap shot

This summer, I signed up to be part of a Sunday School team at Calvary Tabernacle. I’ve played a variety of ministerial roles in my lifetime, even leading a Sunday School class for teens, but this has been my first experience teaching adolescents.

Each Sunday School team consists of a leader and two teaching assistants. As [...]

Evangelist T.L. Smith and our miracle baby

United Pentecostal Church Evangelist T.L. Smith, of Kinder, Louisiana, preached a revival at Calvary Tabernacle in Quincy, Illinois, where he accurately prophesied the birth of Jonathan and Tollie Mohr’s baby boy.

The wisdom of the four lepers

2 Kings 7:3-4 (King James Version)

3 And there were four leprous men at the entering in of the gate: and they said one to another, Why sit we here until we die? 4 If we say, We will enter into the city, then the famine is in the city, and we shall die there: [...]

Calvary Tabernacle celebrates Easter

Calvary Tabernacle in Quincy had a great Easter Sunday morning celebration this year. We had 125 (?) present in our morning worship service, including 40 (?) kids in Children’s Church. (Someone correct me if I have my figures wrong.)

Our pastor, Randy Pate, preached about being “Afar Off” (Luke 22:54), and we had a great response. [...]
